How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

Long, warmer days in the spring and summer can mean more time to enjoy the outdoors. And unless you work to control them, mosquitoes will be waiting on you the minute you step outside. Aside from the big welts and insane itching they can cause, mosquitoes are known to carry and spread dangerous diseases that can infect you and your family.

Wearing long sleeves and insect repellent outside after dusk is a good start in protecting yourself and your family. But the best and most effective course of action is with a professional pest control service that can rid your property of mosquitoes no matter what stage of the life cycle.

How to Identify Mosquitoes

There are nearly 200 types of mosquitoes found in the United States. Most of them are just considered biting nuisances and don’t spread germs. The ones that do spread harmful germs fall into one of three categories:

Culex Mosquitoes

Culex mosquitoes sometimes referred to as common house mosquitoes, are small with primarily gray, oval-shaped bodies, six legs, antennae, and scales that can be white, green, silver, or iridescent blue. This type of mosquito prefers warm, moist environments like lakes, ponds, or marshes, but they will also use stagnant water in trash can covers, kiddie pools, or birdbaths to lay eggs or nests. They are most active after dusk and can transmit diseases like West Nile Virus and Western/Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

Aedes Mosquitoes

The largest concentration of the Aedes mosquito, typically found in the southern half of the United States, but since they are considered invasive, they are often found all over the country. They are small, about the head of a pencil eraser, and have black and white striped bodies. They are active during the day and thrive on human blood. Like all mosquitoes, they love stagnant water and lay eggs in places like used tires or flower pots. Aedes mosquitoes spread dangerous and deadly viruses like Zika, yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya.

Anopheles Mosquitoes

The Anopheles mosquito is often referred to as the malaria mosquito because it’s known to transmit the disease. This mosquito can also cause heartworms in dogs. They are usually black or dark brown with spotted wings. When they land on you, they rest and feed at a 45-degree angle. Anopheles mosquitoes are active from dusk until dawn and prefer humid, marshy areas, but stagnant water will do.

Preventing Mosquito Infestations

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, making them more commonly found near lakes, ponds, or marshes. But they can breed in standing water that’s no more than a half-inch deep, so you must make sure you get rid of anything that holds water in and around your property. Inspect the area around your home, especially after it rains, and empty any container holding water. Pool covers, new tires, kiddie pools, birdbaths, and flowerpots are all attractive mosquito breeding grounds.

Female mosquitoes breed continuously and need a blood meal to lay fertile eggs, so they always look to feed on humans. Most mosquito types are active from dusk until dawn, so stay inside whenever possible to avoid getting bit. If you are outside, protect your skin with insect repellent and by wearing long sleeves and pants.

The most effective way to get rid of mosquitoes is with professional pest control services, but there are some other ways to make yourself and your property less attractive to them.

  • Run a small fan on your porch outside. Mosquitoes aren’t strong flyers, so the force from the fan can keep them away.
  • Mosquito zappers attract mosquitoes with heat and carbon dioxide and will kill them when they get too close. Zappers can be bought online and at home improvement stores.
  • Citronella candles and torches repel mosquitoes. Planting lemongrass around your property is also an effective way to keep mosquitoes away.
